Madagascar features a wide variety of dialects that differ from region to region in terms of vocabulary, pronunciation, and syntax. Unlike the situation in many African countries, and except in extreme cases, two Malagasy speakers from different dialect regions can generally understand one another. There is, however, an official Malagasy language that is easily understood by most of the population, primarily derived from the dialect of the central highlands.
